Affirmation.  People seek it if they don’t have it from the ones most important to them (parents, bosses, etc.).  God the Father affirmed God the Son publicly.  We should do the same with our own children.  We should also know that the Father who found Joy in Christ also finds joy in us as we Follow Him.

Lord, I will obey Your will…starting with Baptism.

Revelation

You were Made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and that should be where Your identity rests…both as God’s Creation in His image and as God’s Child as His son/daughter if you are a follower of Christ and have been Mended by Christ.  The Father identified the Son in today’s text.  You bring similar pleasure to God and you can find similar security and identity in Knowing that God loves you and finds joy in you.  Rest in that.

John’s preparation of the people was a heart preparation for he knew that when a heart is changed then all externals will work themselves out.  Luke’s account tells more of what these external might look like and you will see them as issues of social justice.

Revelation

John admonished the religious leaders to ‘prove by the way they live that they had repented and turned to God’.  What about salvation by faith alone?  These men were leaning upon something other than faith alone for they had committed their faith into their  own bloodline rather than in the point of their bloodline (the coming Messiah).  John called them to prove their heart changing faith by life-changing action.  This is what Obedient Service looks like.  We come to Know and Love God through faith in Christ and that faith produces action!

Ever had a child wander away?  Today’s text reminds us of the old adventure slogan: “Not all who wander are lost.”  Yet, even though Jesus knew exactly where He was supposed to be, his family didn’t get the memo.  The devotion of this pre-teen Messiah would mark His adult life but even then He found ways to also be obedient to His family.  Following God doesn’t sacrifice one for the other unless your devotion to something in your family goes against God’s Word (is sinful).

Yield

Lord, I will be obedient to You and Your Word.

Jesus (the Word of John 1) modeled amazing commitment and devotion to God’s Word.

Revelation

As a young boy, Jesus was in a season of great growth.  The scriptures teach that  His growth was not only physical (stature) but also spiritual (wisdom).  If Jesus, the Son of God, could grow in this way then we certainly can.  Challenge yourself to grow to Know God more!

Joseph/Mary’s responsibilities towards caring for the Messiah didn’t end at birth.  They were called to protect and care for this child by doing some extreme things.  They relocated multiple times to do this.  They learned to hear the voice of God so that they would be aware of what to do.  This is actually true for any parent.  Your child isn’t the Messiah but they are important to God…so care for them as ‘they grow up healthy and strong…filled with wisdom and God’s favor”.

Herod is an example of Satan’s deceiving ways.  He wanted power and title and wanted nobody to compete for his glory.  This hunger brought him all the way to infanticide.  As Christ-Followers that live in a very rough world, we must not fold to the desires of the flesh like this.  How do we keep from it?  God has given us His Holy Spirit to Morph our Mindset so Satan can’t deceive us.  His purposes are life and not destruction.  James 4 reminds us to Submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from us.

Simeon knew that the Messiah had been promised and was eagerly waiting for Him.  He trusted and loved God and had an intimate relationship with God so that he was led by God’s Spirit.  This put him in the temple on the day Jesus was also at the temple.  Knowing and Loving God will always put you in a place to serve God.  Simeon was able to bless the child and speak a prophetic word to his family (and to us through the scriptures).

Fruits of the Holy Spirit are shown in the angelic song.  Joy and Peace are both mentioned.  Is your life full of these things?  The angels taught that the Good News of Jesus would deliver joy and peace to the world.  Further in the New Testament we learn that the Morphing work of the Holy Spirit allows us as Christ Followers to be filled with joy, peace and many others.  See Galatians 5: 25-26.

It is easy to see where a betrothed husband (like Joseph) could struggle with the news of his soon-to-be-wife’s pregnancy.  In human terms, it couldn’t be.  The only human alternative would be divorce.  Yet, when Joseph opened Himself to God’s leading, he found the strength and understanding for grace, forgiveness (though he didn’t need it in this case).  Let God direct you in how to act and react to natural things around you so that you see the supernatural accompaniments too.
