Much of the angst of the religious leaders had to do with Jesus seemingly ignoring/breaking the rules of the Sabbath which were basically not to do anything on the 7th day.  Jesus gives clarity here to help them understand that the sabbath was not to be a burden but a blessing.  The angst these men were showing on this holy day was worse than the work they weren’t doing.  Let’s be careful to pay attention to the Author of the law and the fulfiller of the law - Jesus!

Lord, thank You for providing rest for my soul as I abide in You.

Revelation

Priests were always working and serving on the Sabbath.  Now Jesus, our Great High Priest, incarnates amongst us and does many priestly things on many holy days.  This should have been greatly expected and anticipated by those waiting for the Messiah…by those who Know God.  Yet, they didn’t seem to Know or Love Him but had become hung up upon legal interpretations of a law that was meant to penetrate the heart.  Let’s be aware of our own situations and keep from doing the same.

God designed the Sabbath (a 7th day of rest for man) and even rested on the 7th day (in Genesis) as an example for us.  Now we see Jesus (God the Son) coming to earth and serving us on the 7th day.  Rather than gratitude, many of the people wanted to kill Him for it.  When God acts like God, we should bow now bristle.

Revelation

For the person who hasn’t come to faith in Christ, sin still dominates their thoughts and actions.  This means that often they miss the things of God including the Good News that Jesus came to save/mend them.  Jesus didn’t come to judge those Marred in Sin because they stand in judgement already because of that sin.  The Old Testament law works as a measurement for all of us if we do not have Christ who fulfilled the law so that we could be saved.

Jesus is on a world-sized rescue mission but He continues to minister to individuals as often as He does groups.  This is telling of the heart of God.  You aren’t a number, you are a person created by God and in His image.

Revelation

Before Jesus ‘Mends’ this man, He asks Him if he wants it.  The man, confused and focused on his own disability, says he is unable to do what Jesus has asked.  This is so often the case for the Marred person.  We need Jesus because without Him we can’t do anything.  Somewhere between ‘I can’t’ and ‘Stand up’, Jesus did the miracle.  This miracle was more than in the man’s body but also in his mind (changing his view from what he couldn’t do to what Jesus could).  When Jesus Mends, He does a work on every part of us!

For centuries, the Jewish religious leaders had adopted a very stoic view of their practices.  They were now upset that the disciples of Jesus seemed to be having a continual party.  Jesus tries to help them understand because ‘God was with them’.  Further, He gives illustration to explain the ‘new thing’ He was doing was also involving a new group of common people who would embrace His message.

7 times in John we hear Jesus utter the words ‘I Am’…claiming that He was the Son of the God the Father and Divine.  The people mostly struggled with this…until an empty tomb proved He was no mere mortal.  In today’s text, He both forgave and healed…doing things the people never thought they would see.  A life of following Jesus is indeed amazing.

A sign of being Mended by Jesus is the desire to bring others to be Mended by Him.  These four friends give us a powerful example of what our own Ministry could look like.  You may never carry someone through a roof but you can find ways to introduce those whom you influence with the love of God.

Jesus wasn’t trying to spread His fame.  He was simply fulfilling all that the law and the prophets had spoken as we went along this Calvary road.  However, when you truly get delivered from a mess by the Messiah it should be difficult to stay silent.  Are you a silent saint or a sounding siren for Christ?

Revelation

Jesus had a ministry that was part of His calling.  His calling was to seek and save those who were lost and His ministry was to heal and deliver along the way towards that calling. You also have a ministry.  The only purpose of your life is not to get saved and then die.  Seek out this ministry.  How can you fulfill it?  Where will it take you?  In this you will find the life that Christ has promised you.
