Jesus tells His disciples 'You are my friends if you do what I command. (John 15:14 NLT)'
This was not just for them but also a command to us...a command to be doers of the Word and not just hearers. In yesterdays Way Community, we talked about several traits of obedience and connected them to the first act of obedience for the Christ-Follower - Baptism. God directs followers of Jesus on how to be obedient. Biblically, the first step is Baptism.
Baptism was something that was already going on before Jesus commanded it to His followers. Ceremonial cleansing was happening within the Jewish Nation for centuries...most commonly as a ceremonial cleansing before Sabbath. Sometimes it was a washing of the hands and other times it was an immersion of the body. Baptism by immersion had also been used for Gentiles that would convert to Judaism. It was an outward act showing an inward change. Similarly, John The Baptist came to prepare the way for Jesus. As he told the people to turn from their sins he commanded them to be baptized. This baptism was a sign of their repentance and their willingness to turn to God.
Each day this week we will look at Baptism and pair it with a part of being an obedient Christ-Follower. Are you 'doing what Jesus' commanded' in your life? What can you do today to be obedient to His call to love others as He has loved you?
Have a great week.
