In today's text, we see two vastly different responses.
First, we see how the Apostles respond to the demand that they not share the Gospel:
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
These men understood their priorities. Do we listen to the men that can put us in jail or do we listen to the One who got us out! That is a good Word for us to remember!
Not only do they let these folks know that they must obey God rather than them...they then share The Message with them too! Now that is bold. It was also critical. These men needed to hear the WHY. The Gospel message is the only message that can change the hearts of man...yet it can be ignored and it can even motivate further destructive behavior.
Now, the leaders had a chance to respond to the Gospel. How do they do?
When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.
It is great when we respond to the Gospel 'well'. It is tragic when we reject its truth, power and hope! It is weak when we strike out at good with evil because of stubbornness, pride and fear!
Like our devotion today, we each have frequent opportunities to respond well or respond poorly. God's Spirit will guide us appropriately. Our flesh will not be as reliable.
Let us respond well to God today!
