The apostles had bravely followed God. They had seen Him deliver them from prison. They had gone right back to work (sharing the Gospel in the Temple). Now, they have been warned to stop.
Their opposition has been made enough to kill...but one of their leaders slows them down and tells them to wait it out. He tells them that if the power of God is truly at work in these men then they couldn't stop them anyway. Now we pick up today's text:
So they took his advice, and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.
These followers of Jesus would not cease to be obedient to the God who had shown His great love for them through Jesus and had provided for them time and again! These brave disciples lived an adventurous life exhibiting all 4 of our core values!
Community - these men banded together. They suffered together. They taught together. They walked together. A true Christian community is together during the ups and the downs.
Commission - God spoke to these men. They heard His Plan and His Direction and they went on mission together - CO-Mission - with God and with each-other. Even after imprisonment they were willing to GO together.
Compassion - These men show compassion when they share the Gospel with their persecutors. Wow. That is love in action (a great definition of Compassion).
Celebration - They rejoiced that they were counted worthy. Re'Joy'cing is letting the joy on the inside of you come onto the outside.
