As we become an obedient follower of Jesus we enter into His New Covenant and become New Creations. We begin a life led by The Holy Spirit.
Following Jesus begins a life born in The Spirit - In John 3:5-7 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The Spiritual Life is given to us when we are born by the Spirit.
The disciples that were following Jesus loved having Him next to them. They could watch Him and physically follow Him wherever He went. This was a great comfort. Could anything be better than being with Jesus? He said yes. As good as the disciples had it while they were with Him, He told them about a better day coming. Read John 14:15-30, John 15:26-27 and John 16:5-15. This is a promise that we also get to enjoy. Our lives should be guided by God's Spirit as He directs us towards The Way of God.
What do these texts say that the Holy Spirit will do?
1. He will lead us into all truth (John 14:17). This is a leading into the truth of God's Word and a leading away from the false ideals that we can get into when we stray from The Word.
2. He will testify about Jesus (John 15:26). These disciples worried that they would get lost when Jesus wasn't physically present and near them. Jesus promised them that The Holy Spirit would continue to teach and testify to them about how Jesus did life and would do life in their situations. What a comfort from The Comforter!
3. Conviction of sin, of God's Righteousness and of Judgement (John 16:8). The Holy Spirit guides people towards The Way's of God (Righteousness) and away from The way's of man (sin). The Holy Spirit teaches the consequences of following the Way's of God (Right Standing with God through Jesus) as well as the consequences of following the way's of man (judgment).
All week we will look at the Spiritual life together and learn about the great gift that God has given us in Himself - The Holy Spirit.
