Within the same Bible text we read yesterday we read of Joseph taking charge in Egypt to help the people prepare for tough times ahead. Re-read Genesis 41 to catch the story.
Does Joseph display 'learned skills' or are these 'special gifts from God' to organize, plan and manage such a task? I believe they are both.
We do a dis-service to God when we try to hard to separate skills/gifts. If you have decided to place your faith in God as Creator and Savior then you must see that 'Everything Is Spiritual'. Almighty God has control over everything. Those skills you use in the workplace are skills that you have because of how He made you. Sure, you may have improved them with experience, education and hard work but who do you think graced you to be able to do that - God did.
So, yes, Joseph was a skilled leader. But, yes, Joseph was a gifted leader too.
In your own life, home, career, the same can be said. God has wired you a certain way to do certain things and once you find those things you will be able to do them 'for His glory'. Many people have called that 'purpose'. Bringing Glory to God is indeed our purpose. Doing our best at whatever we do is one way to do that. As a follower of Jesus, we should be known for giving our best in whatever we do. Is that how you are known?
As a child, that can be that you do your best when your parent asks you to do something - the first time they ask.
As a youth, that may be doing your best on a group assignment in school even though the other members of the group do not.
As an adult, this can mean performing above the bare minimum in your job even though your boss isn't looking.
As a Christian, this should always mean that we are willing to work for The Lord even when it seems we are working for someone else. As the Bible says in Colossians 3 - 22:24 - Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord. Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.
How can you use your skills/gifts today?
Are you giving your best?
