Have you ever had bad news that ruined your day? Maybe you have had somebody tell you that they have good news and bad news and then ask you which one you want first? In that case, I usually pick the bad first.
Towards the end of our Bible text (Mark 10:17-23) we see Jesus commanding this:
...go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Jesus had just given this man the Good News - that to have eternal life He needed to let go of some stuff and follow Him. The man took it as bad news because that stuff represented his security, significance and success.
