The BIG One

Today is the start to a new week.  I bet you will ask some questions along the way this week.  Questions to your boss or to your family…questions that are small and maybe some that are bigger.  This week’s Bible text covers the BIGGEST question we can ask and is found in Mark 10:17-23- And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.  You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”  Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

Here, Jesus answers this rich young man with ‘Come, follow Me.’ This young man had assumed that He needed to ‘do something’ or ‘do something more’ or maybe he had hoped he would here Jesus say ‘you’re all good’.  He already had an idea of what the answer was therefore he wasn’t ready to receive the real answer.  When you and I ask a question that we already have a preconceived answer then we will be less likely to receive the real answer.

Jesus provides the way to God, the way to heaven and the way to eternal life.  To trust, and therefore follow Him, is to receive the free gift of salvation.  Elsewhere in the Gospels He is asked similar questions. .  After He had fed the multitude, the religious leaders surrounded Him and asked Him this question in John 6:

[28] Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”

Jesus answered them in this powerful way.

[29] Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

Have you believed in Him who He has sent?  Have you received and believed the answer to the question ‘How can you receive eternal life?’ The answer is to trust and obey Jesus.  Oh, by the way, that decision doesn’t just offer a reward that starts when you ‘stop’…the benefits begin immediately!
