Take a look at this week’s Bible text: http://www.esvbible.org/Mark%2010%3A46-52/
Now focus in on the very first verse in the encounter: And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.
Notice that Jesus had come thru Jericho but the Gospel of Mark says very little about the details. It almost seems insignificant. Yet, here is a truth that is important for us to know: Everything is significant in the Kingdom of God.
In High School, I got to be in drama for two years. The roles that I played were usually very small. Those are known as ‘bit parts’ to some…and I sometimes felt that my ‘bit’ was not significant. I probably even griped about it. Yet, it takes all the parts to make a successful and entertaining play. It also takes all the parts (bits or not) to accomplish all God desires in His Kingdom! Your part is important.
Now, so that we can realize that there is plenty of spiritual reasons for every bit of scripture (including Jericho in this text), here is a thought to consider...Just as Jericho was the entrance into the promised land so also this ‘passing through Jericho’ trip was Jesus heading towards the Cross and giving us access to all of God’s Promises. The disciples are following Jesus into the promised land just as the Israelites followed God/Joshua thru Jericho to the promised land.
Do less worrying about the size and significance of the part you play and show more concern for giving your all so that your part is done to the Glory of God!
