We want a sign. We want clear directions. We ask for clear guidance.
To be led by God's Holy Spirit also means that we are following after Him. Scripture refers to this as 'walking by The Spirit'. Back in the times of The Old Testament in The Bible, God granted His people a visible sign to show them which way (and when) to go:
Now whenever the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out on their journey, following it. But if the cloud did not rise, they remained where they were until it lifted. The cloud of the LORD hovered over the Tabernacle during the day, and at night fire glowed inside the cloud so the whole family of Israel could see it. This continued throughout all their journeys. (Exodus 40:36-38 NLT)
Many of us say that we would be happy to follow God if we had such physical support so that we 'knew' where to go. We wonder aloud why God gave His people such a physical sign then but now we do not have anything similar.
It's true that we don't have pillars of fire/cloud to guide us. That does not mean we are left without direct leadership from God for us. God has granted us His Word and His Holy Spirit to lead us in an even closer way. The Israelites could see the pillar of cloud. You can see God's direct Revelation in His Word. He hasn't left you without directions. He hasn't abandoned you alone in the wilderness. He is still guiding us perfectly as we desire to be led by His Spirit.
However, imagine if the people of Israel complained that they couldn't see the pillar of cloud BUT they never opened their eyes to look for it. God leads by His Word but we must meditate and mutter in it to receive the powerful guidance He offers.
Men, I invite you to meet me tomorrow (Saturday, February 21st) at 9am at 2612 Boots Drive in Casper for our monthly 'Men of The Way' get together. We will share breakfast and then dig into the Word around this very topic.
