Led by The Spirit - Week 3

Friday again!  I hope you have been praying and studying our Friday topic of being 'Led by God's Holy Spirit'.  Just in case you are new to the site, here are the first to installments:

Week 1: http://www.thewayincasper.org/blog/2015/1/23/led-by-the-spirit-week-1

Week 2: http://www.thewayincasper.org/blog/2015/1/29/led-by-the-spirit-week-2

This week's text parallel's the work of God's Spirit and the work of our sinful nature.

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. (‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭16-17‬ NLT)

You could keep reading thru the next several verses to get a detail parallel of these two topics.

As I pray through this text today I see a few challenges for us:

1. God's Holy Spirit is clearly willing to guide/lead us.  Scripture makes this clear and puts the onus on us to allow Him to do so.  How are we led by The Spirit?  We first must allow the Spirit to guide our lives.  For instance, you might say you are willing to let me drive your car.  However, that will not happen until you get out of the drivers seat.  Are you asking God to lead you yet retaining the position of leader of your own life?

2. It's not about 'not doing'.  We so often take initiative to try and not 'do what our sinful nature craves'.  This is well intentioned but it is like scooping water out of a boat with a teaspoon when the boat has a hole in it the size of a baseball.  Not sinning is accomplished by being led by The Spirit...rather than being led by The Spirit is accomplished by not sinning.

3. You are free to be led by The Spirit but you will have a constant battle going on in your heart and mind.  All of Galatians 5 is giving us this great news of our Freedom of followers of Jesus.  Yet this Freedom is not because sin's power is no longer working against the Spirit's power in our life.  This freedom came with our choice to follow Jesus and it continues with our choice to be led by and to follow The Spirit: Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. (‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭25‬ NLT)

Keep praying.  Keep studying.  Ask God to lead you by His Spirit.

The Way will be worshipping at 1326 E. 24th St. at 10:30am and 5pm here in Casper this Sunday.  I hope you can join with us.
