Inch Deep, Mile Wide

Do you get easily excited about things but find your interest wanes quickly.  It’s a common thing.  So common, Jesus used one of His four soil illustrations to help us learn about it:

(Illustration) Mark 4:5 Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow.6 But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn't have deep roots, it died.

(Explanation) Mark 4:16 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy.17 But since they don't have deep roots, they don't last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God's word (or have temptation).

Again, the seed is God’s Word and the soil is the heart. This soil is shallow.  The seed does get deep enough to begin to grow but it still doesn’t get deep enough to protect it from the hot sun. The question for us today would be’How does your faith stand up under trial?’

Does our interest wane quickly? If it does then we did not make a lasting commitment.  Jesus taught about this in John 8:31 – Jesus says ‘If you continue in my Word, then you are my disciples’. We can emotionally respond to the Good News of the Gospel but never truly except the Lordship of Jesus.  Taking the parts we like but discarding the rest. ‘At once it sprang up’ – if your excitement wanes…your faith may not be genuine.

When we have no depth then we are susceptible to most anything like: Sun – Heat of Trials.  Sun is good for plants ‘if’ they have roots.  Lack of Moisture – rain softens the soil…prepares even a hard heart to receive the seed/Word. Persecution deepens the roots of a true follower of Jesus but it only exposes the shallowness of a false Christian.

If we have only a shallow interest in something then we are not truly committed.  We may look committed for a brief time but we are really only testing to see if we like the results or get what we want out of it.  Shallow faith is not genuine faith thus you will never receive the benefits of faith.  Shallow friendship is not true friendship thus you will never receive the benefits of friendship.

Have you heard the message of Jesus sacrificial love for you and let it take root deep within your heart or is it still sitting up on the surface?  You can be a mile wide and still produce very little in this life if you are just an inch deep.  Consider your own heart today.
