When we allow God to shine His Light through us there is great effect. Light exposes and eliminates darkness. In John 1 we see that The Light (Jesus) shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot extinguish it. This reminds me of one of my favorite old hymns. Here it is in a bit of a jazzed up form:
However, if we choose to keep God’s Light from shining through we are probably just as likely to hide other things too. If we hide God’s good then we will most likely try and hide what we see as ‘our bad’. These could be secrets or problems. Look at the text in Mark 4:22 For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light.23 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand."
Now, there is a double meaning (at least) in this text. Jesus is talking about God’s Kingdom here…that, in time, all of the things that He was teaching His disciples would be made known in the world…but He also gave us a Word that applies to hiding our light and hiding bad stuff.
Just as we are challenged not to hide the good things God gives us, we also have a challenge to not store up or hide bad things. Doing so will weigh us down. Hebrews 12:1 illustrates what we should be doing instead of hiding secrets and sins when it says ‘let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us’.
So, we shouldn’t hide the good stuff from ourselves or from others. Are their things about God’s Kingdom that are still un-known/secret to you that you would like to learn? Ask for God’s light to be shed on those areas.
Are there secrets that you are carrying and trying to keep hidden? The energy and weight of that burden is doing nothing but slowing you down from running the race of life well. Can you be strong enough to let them go? With God’s strength, I believe you can!
