Two’s Company…3’s a Crowd
Many things compete for our hearts and minds…our time and affections. Job, money, hobbies, stuff…there is not end the the things that can crowd our hearts. Jesus 3rd illustration deals with this reality:
Mark 4:7 - Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants so they produced no grain.
Mark 4:18 The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God's word,19 but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced (they never grow into maturity).
Some have hard and crusty hearts towards the Word…others can be shallow. Today we deal with the old adage that ‘Three is a Crowd’. When we take God’s Word and put it in a crowded heart filled with other things we have not fulfilled the great commandment God has given us in Matthew 18:37 ‘Jesus replied, "'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ Note the word ALL.
For the follower of Jesus, our heart should hold communion between us and God…alone. It seems that with some, there is plenty of Soil for growth but too much competition. God is a jealous God and He wants all of you.
Like a real garden…just weeding it won’t clean it…you must plant the Word. If you clean out the house and leave it empty then it will fill up again with the same junk (or even more) than it had at first. We must be filling ourselves up with the goodness of God. We must allow His Word to dwell in us and all it to crowd out the other things that would compete for our time, talents and treasure.
Worries can crowd out God’s peace. Wealth can crowd out God’s provision. What is crowding God’s Word out of your heart? Ask God to help you see what things might be doing this and then to empower you to remove them…or more likely to allow Him to surgically remove them for you.
