Momma, pray with me. Daddy, why is God letting this happen? Honey, can’t you do something about this?
When crisis hits a home it doesn’t just hit one person. Sure, it may primarily effect only one but the whole family has repercussions. It’s a family affair. Let’s wrap up this week’s Bible text as we look at this family in Mark 5:
37 Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James).38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing.39 He went inside and asked, "Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn't dead; she's only asleep.” 40 The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying.41 Holding her hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum," which means "Little girl, get up!"42 And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.43 Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat.
The bonds of family can be stretched during crisis but, if a family stands in faith together, they can also be strengthened during it. Can you imagine the amazing dinner this family enjoyed that night?
For Dad, he could have great peace knowing that someone had needed to go get Jesus and he had done it. No matter what mistakes or shortfalls he had experienced in the past, he had done the right thing this time. Maybe his little girl even said ‘Thank you daddy, for bringing Jesus to me.’ What a picture of the opportunity each Father has.
For Mom, she knew right where she needed to be…next to that little girl’s side. I dare you to try to get in between them! She could be proud of her husband’s leadership. Maybe her daughter looks to her and says ‘Thank you for always being here by my side!’
For the daughter, I doubt she had any teenage apathy after this episode. I’m certain her mom’s cooking tasted extra sweet that night. I wonder if she asked why all the people where gathered around outside weeping…
For each of them, their lives were forever changed because they invited Jesus into their home. We come to Jesus one by one but we bring Jesus into our home so that our entire family can experience Him and learn of His love. It’s a family affair. How are you bringing Jesus (your faith in Him) into your home?
