19 Million Americans are affected by depression each year. For some, this is a short-term problem but for others it can continue for years and years. More than half of people that suffer from depression seek treatment. This is our second problem to deal with this week and we want to Glue God’s Promises to it!
Psalm 42 is a picture of a person who is discouraged and depressed. They want to return home but cannot. Much depression comes because we cannot do what we think we would like to do. They despair at times but ultimately decide to turn to God to lift their spirits. What a picture of how we can overcome depression. Twice, the Psalmist says these words:
5 Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and 6 my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you.
In Romans 8 we learn this powerful truth:
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,* neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love.39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
One cause of depression is the feeling of separation…of being all alone. This can be physical, emotional or spiritual separation. This verse is such a powerful promise that we need never worry about being separated from the love of God if we have faith in Jesus and follow Him.
Is depression something that you struggle with? One powerful help can be to Glue God’s Promises to it. Put these verses in your memory bank and then begin to meditate upon them when you feel depressed. See God wipe away those feelings and replace them with a confidence and a joy that comes from Him and Him alone!
