In an upcoming Pixar kids movie named ‘Inside Out’ we get to see inside an 11 year old girls mind and we meet 7 different emotions. One is anger. This emotion takes over at times and wreaks havoc on most everything else inside of her. This is very fitting. Anger can be a big problem for us and needs to be dealt with through God’s Word just like any other problem. Let’s see how to Glue God’s Promises to our anger.
The first promise is also a command. James 1:19-20 says 19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.20 Human anger* does not produce the righteousness* God desires. It gives us a clear teaching that our anger doesn’t make us right with God. It also reminds us how to overcome angry outbursts…by listening more and being slow to speak. What a recipe to Glue to our hearts and minds. We get angry too fast when we listen too fast.
Our next promise is in Proverbs 19:11 ‘Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.’ Cool. We get a promise when we refrain from anger and overlook the things that can anger us. We actually become people who are recognized for their ability to ‘overlook’ the thing that could anger us. We become known for grace! What a reputation. How would your life change if you dealt with your anger by overlooking the thing that has brought you to anger?
Ok, one more to grow on…Proverbs 15:1 gives us a promise that will help us prevent anger in others. ‘A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.’ This one will help you be an anger eliminator in others instead of an anger instigator. Soft answers turn it away. Tone it down don’t stir it up. What a great trait for a follower of Jesus. Have a great weekend!
