Tired Twelve

How often do you finish a work week exhausted?  The disciples of Jesus were serving Him faithfully and as they returned and He saw they needed rest:

Mark 6:30 - 30 The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught.31 Then Jesus said, "Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile." He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat.

There will be times when doing what you do, even if you love it, will leave you tired.  When those times come it is good to find a way to rest.  Rest looks different to many of us…some people rest primarily by sleep.  Other folks love to lose themselves in a book.  I enjoy taking a hike.  Introverts usually require time alone to re-charge while extroverts find the same ability to rest after spending the time in a large group of folks.  Finding whatever method of rest is effective for you is a very important tool.

Why is it important?  If you do not rest you can become too tired and when you get this way your interest and effectiveness can wane.  Even more, you can become so tired that you ‘get tired’ of doing what you love.  This is dangerous.  Galatians 6:9 instructs us that 'So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.’  Don’t give up.  When you get exhausted go and find a way to re-charge so you can continue serving.  This applies to your work life, your family life and your times spent serving The Lord.

These 12 disciples were very tired.  Jesus showed His love and compassion for them by noticing their need for rest.  He took them away.  Did you know God cares enough about you to see your exhaustion?  Did you know He communicates to you, by His Spirit, when enough is enough?  This is just one of the many ways that God’s love is proven for you.  To be in tune to God’s Spirit’s guiding you need to be close to Him.  To be close to Him requires your acceptance of His Plan and His Way for you.  That means believing in and following Jesus.

So, it may be time for you to evaluate your level of exhaustion and determine the best way to rest and recharge.  How do you rest?
