When you mess up while writing a check you are supposed to write V O I D on it in big letters. Why? Your mistake has caused that check to be completely useless and you must identify that by ‘voiding’ the check.
Have you ever made other types of mistakes that have seemed to ‘void’ out opportunities in your life? As Jesus teaches this group of religious leaders, He explains that their attitude and tradition have the same affect.
Mark 7: 9 And He said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God) 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
Jesus illustrates how their religious behavior might be keeping the traditional interpretation of God’s Word but was falling well short of the heart of God’s Word and Law - to love. This loveless behavior was voiding the power of God’s Word in their life.
Here is the problem…these folks thought they were doing right. They were so confident that they kept going this way…even though they were voiding God’s Word with each thing they did.
Can you think of an example of a time where religious behavior or wrong interpretation of scripture led to someone missing out on God’s Plan? This could be something you have done personally.
Even though we can void out the Word of God, God promises that His Word will ‘not return void’ and that it will ‘accomplish the purpose for which He sent it’. Isaiah 55:11. This is a wonderful promise. It means that He is not surprised when our behavior gets in the way and that even when it does He has other purposes for His Word. Maybe that purpose would be to convict us of wrong understanding or direct us to different behavior.
Is God’s Word of full affect in your life or are you hindering it? Are there areas where you have to ‘write void’ because of mistaken behaviors or understandings? What steps can you take today to see the fruit of that awesome promise in Isaiah 55:11?
