A cold glass of ice water on a hot day…especially if you have been outside working…it feels good to be refreshed! In Paul’s letter to Philemon, he mentions that Philemon was a person who had a history of refreshing others: For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. (Philemon 1:7 ESV)
He then asks Philemon to ‘be a refresher’ once more in how he chooses to deal with his former slave: Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ. (Philemon 1:20 ESV)
We can choose to be many things in this life but I think being a person who refreshes others has to be high on the list of how I would like to be. We can refresh others by our actions and by our words and certainly by a combination of both. When we choose to place God and others above ourselves we are sure to refresh.
Have you been refreshed by someone lately? Do you find refreshment in your time in God’s Word? Who is God calling you to refresh?
