Have you ever had such a good time (at a place or with a certain people) that you just didn’t want to leave? I have…and my youngest daughter experiences that frequently when I come to get her from a friends house. I think Peter, James and John felt that way on the mountain with Jesus. Peter voiced this when he said:
And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” Mark 9:5
These guys had seen the glory of God on the mountain and they wanted to stay and keep it alive! Yet, the mountaintop experience was coming to an end and they couldn’t stay in this glorious environment:
And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. Mark 9:9
When a great experience turns into a crutch that helps us avoid our next steps then we must check ourselves. Nobody would get onto these men for wanting to stay with Jesus. We all should want more of that. Yet, when we have been with Jesus and He says it is time to follow Him down the mountain then we should line up and head down. They did this…it is an example for us in life. We should long for intimate times of devotion with God and we should long for times when we hear or see Him point to our next location. Do you?
