Idle Talk vs. Idol Talk

Our words reveal much about our heart.  Jesus taught us that "out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Luke‬ ‭6:43-45‬

Along the way, the disciples heard powerful truth about the coming time when Jesus would be betrayed, would suffer, would die and would rise again.  What did they talk about as they walked?

“And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭9:33-34‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Of all the topics to discuss in the presence of God The Son, they chose to talk about who was the greatest.  This was an indicator of a big problem.  They were not just passing the time with idle, this revealed an 'idol' of another kind: the idol of self.

Both of these types of talk can be troublesome.  Idle talk can lead us away from fruitful discussion.  We can discuss the weather instead of the Savior.  Idol talk is when our heart isn't right and we talk about things that are more important to us than they should be...more important even that God.

Rather than idle or idol talk...let's take the example given by Scripture and“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians‬ ‭4:29‬

Let's led the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart be pleasing to God and a blessing to others.  Who is the greatest?  Jesus is!
