The Downside of Fear

I’m afraid of a few things…clowns are high on the list.  What things do you fear?  Fear can cripple us.  It can also cause us to act in ways that are clearly against our faith.  This was the case for the religious leaders when Jesus came and overturned their ‘for-profit business’ in the temple.

And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. (Mark 11:18 ESV)

They were looking to destroy Jesus…Why?…because they feared Him.  Why did they fear Him?  Because he represented a threat to their way of life.  This is the downside of fear…it causes us to act in ways that would embarrass us if we were thinking clearly.

Fear can cause us to do the worst of things.  It caused these men to mount an offense against Christ and eventually put Him to the Cross.  Now, that was God’s ultimate plan as it would secure our salvation but still, you wouldn’t want to excuse this fear-based tantrum because of a good outcome.  God uses good and evil to bring about His plans on the earth.  He is over all.

Are there any poor behaviors in your life that are caused by the root problem of fear?  Could it be that you are even acting out towards God because of the fear of what it might look like to be obedient to His call?  God has a Word for you on this matter:

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. (1 John 4:18 ESV)

Let the Love of God overcome fear in your life today!
