Johannes has provided a great start for your day with this devotional thought:
We see in today’s text that Jesus answers the Scribe that to love God and love others is the greatest commandment.
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31 ESV)
We so often look at the big 10 commandments and try to measure ourselves to them. We go through them and put a check mark nest to the ones we think we are doing good at. Essentially, we become a bunch of rule followers that live a self centered life.
Jesus said that there is no greater commandment than to love God with all of you and the second to love everyone else the way you love yourself. What this means is that out of your love for God and others you will naturally want to follow the rest of the commandments and live a holy and acceptable life for Christ.
You can say “But I do not steal, I respect my parents, I witness to others, I do not use the Lord’s name in vain, I am a good person, I live by faith in God" and the list goes on. The Bible says this - If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1-2 ESV)
This really puts it in perspective! We can work our fingers to the bone and proclaim Christ till we have no voice left but if we do not do it out of Love it results to nothing!
I want to challenge you today to take a deep look at your life and heart and ask yourselves why you do the things you do. Is it because I know it is the right thing to do or maybe it is because I have to do my check list to be a good person. Whatever your reason is, if it is not done in love stop and pray to God and ask Him to help you to love like He does. Read you Bible and you will see the greatest love story of all time in how God loves us and gives us grace! We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19 ESV) this is the biggest act of love “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 ESV) Jesus loves you so much that He died for you and not only that but he also took all your sin on His shoulders so (if you make Him lord of your life) when God looks at you He sees the blood of Jesus!
I also want to draw your attention to the first commandment and the most important one to love God with all of you – this is done by accepting His Son! Is Jesus the Lord of your life today?
What’s love got to do with it? EVERYTHING!!
