When Jesus illustrated the central theme of the Law (Love God & Love Others) He was not getting rid of all of the other laws given. He was teaching how a person fulfilled their requirements. The ‘Law of Love’ was the key to obeying God perfectly. Yet, even with that key, we would struggle to fulfill the law. That is why I am thankful for this truth given in Matthew 5:17-19 where Jesus says:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19 ESV)
Let’s strive to obey God, His Commands & His Great Commandment. However, as we do this, let’s be eternally grateful that Jesus came and fulfilled that we could not so that we would be set free from ‘the law of sin and death’ and given a life that our law-breaking would have never allowed!
