We support things, at times, that are not wise. As a biblical Christian, we can even support something that goes against our own values and beliefs if we do not study the Scriptures. For instance, in a few weeks, we have a person coming to town who claims to be a ‘Medium’. A Medium is something that goes between two things. For instance, most Medium’s say they have contact with the dead and can bring back some type of message to the living. Now, it would seem pretty obvious that a Christ-Follower would not seek out contact with the dead…or even be entertained by someone who does (or says they do) but I know that this type of thing can be enticing. To help us understand how God teaches on this issue here are three very clear Biblical mandates in regard to ‘Medium’s’:
#1 - A Medium defiles you - Leviticus 19:31 “‘Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God."
#2 - A Medium causes you be turned away from God - Leviticus 20:6 “‘I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people."
#3 - A Medium should not be a replacement for seeking God - Isaiah 8:19 "When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?"
If that isn’t enough, here are 7 others from God’s Word: (1 Samuel 28:3, 1 Samuel 28:9, Isaiah 19:3, Jeremiah 27:9, 2 Chronicles 33:6, 2 Kings 23:24, 2 Kings 21:6).
Now, just in case you might offer the question that of “Isn’t this an Old Testament rule that has been liberated by Jesus?" let me take you to Acts 16:16-24. Here we see a person practicing the same type of behavior that is not just ignored but actually stopped by the Followers of Christ in the Name of Jesus. Why? It was distracting people from what was right and what was from God. It still does that today.
Now, from a standpoint of pastoral experience I would also add this…be careful what you seek. Many well-meaning people open up a ‘spiritual can-of-worms’ when they flirt with the supernatural or even supposed super-natural. There are only two sides: God and Satan. For those that are not for God (see above Scripture) you must be willing to see that they are for the enemy…even if they do not know it. Please, be careful what you seek!
