Make no provision for that mess!

In my quiet time this morning I was reading Romans 13 and thinking about how tired I was.  Honestly, I was reading the firs few verses to think about Godly government.  After a yawn, I scrolled down a few more verses and read this:

Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. (Romans 13:11-14 ESV)

We often put of till tomorrow what we can do today but this Bible text challenges us with a truth that we know ‘that the hour has come that we wake from sleep’.  Now, if this was true when it was written 2000 years ago then it has to be absolutely true today!  Wake Up! Live life don’t hit the snooze button.  Be alert!  Be ready!

Once awake and alert, we can recognize a few things.

First, God’s gracious salvation so very close to us.  God did not save us from a distance.  He sent Jesus to ‘dwell among us’.  That’s very close!  We don’t realize the closeness of God’s grace when we are dozing thru the day.

Then we are told in two different ways to get rid of things that hold us back and keep us down.  God tells us to ‘cast off the works of darkness’ and ‘make no provision for the flesh’.  He even gives a list of things that would be works of darkness…things that gratify the desires of our flesh.  This is part of how we wake up!  Just like a removal of the covers that helped us sleep cozily…casting off mess allows us to become alert to God, to our purpose and calling and to others!  Make no provision for that mess!  Cast it off and live in the light of God - today and everyday!
