It matters where you settle. Gardeners will tell you that it matters where you plant something. Have you given though to where you spend your time and what you are grounded upon? Psalm 1 parallels two options:
Option #1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
First, where not to settle. Not with the wicked, sinners & scoffers. These aren’t friendly terms. They are terms for people who deny God and live a life of negative & empty prattle.
Next, a picture of being grounded well! Like a tree that is planted near a stream that is allowed to put down deep roots to be nourished more and more over its long lifetime. Benefits of spiritual health, fruitfulness & soul prosperity. What a serene image!
Option #2 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Back to the category to avoid and their unfortunate results. When evil takes root in a person, that person never takes root in life. They live a life driven away like the wind…never able to settle, rest or stop. Their path/way leads sadly to destruction.
