One of our children used to fight taking naps. She was afraid she would miss something. She would force herself back awake if she nodded off just in case there was something good happening amongst the awake. Certainly there are times that we need rest but there are also other times that call for us to be awake and alert so we do not miss anything.
Jesus had come back to Peter/James/John two times already. He had been praying intently and had asked these men to wait and watch and pray as He had been. Instead...
And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. (Mark 14:41 ESV)
He found them asleep again. I wonder if sometimes we make the mistake of sleeping thru the good stuff and then losing sleep when we really need it. At this critical time, Jesus wanted them awake and they couldn’t hold their eyelids open.
In our lives, let’s make sure that we are living on purpose so that we can rest in peace. Let’s make sure that we are awake and alert when needed and especially when called upon to do so by God.
