Sometimes it helps to define terms...especially when dealing with major things like failure. You see, we like to think we have failed when we strike out or miss a shot or don't make an A on a test. Those are all disappointments but let me tell you what the ultimate failure is.
After Jesus had been resurrected, He empowered His followers to spread His Gospel to the world. It happened fast but there were opponents to the cause. These folks stood against the Gospel and Jesus and even planned to kill these followers. A wise man named Gamaliel stoop up amongst them and spoke these words to try and slow them down:
“So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown. But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!” Acts 5:38-39.
There it is. The ultimate failure is to find yourself fighting against God. This doesn't only mean that we go against His followers in the way these men had planned. This can be ignoring His Word or not heading accountability from a loving Christian friend. It can even be devaluing a relationship.
The chapter I shared yesterday was Acts 9. In it we learn of Saul/Paul and how he was breathing threats and murder against Jesus followers (Acts 9:1). He was not heading the advice of Gamaliel and was heading directly into a conflict with God. Sadly, he even thought he was doing the right thing. He was blinded by his zeal. Zeal doesn't always mean right.
Maybe, like Saul, you are headed towards a conflict with God. Maybe you are near the ultimate failure of setting yourself and your life in opposition to God. There is still time to turn. Even if you are in Round 6 of a 10 Round match with the Almighty...you don't have to keep fighting!
Put down your sword. Don't just call a truce. Raise the white flag of surrender and align your life with the leading of God. Wondering how to do that? Believe the Gospel (that God loves you so much that He sent Jesus so that you can be saved from any and all failure) and Confess Jesus as Lord (ask God to forgive you of your sin because of the sacrifice of Jesus and commit to follow Jesus and His way).
