Pray The Word and Prepare for The Word
Psalm 50:1 : The LORD, the Mighty One, is God, and he has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets.
Read - Psalm 88, 89, 50
Psalm 50 is a game-changer for the nation of Israel. It would have been easy to develop a religion around sacrifice as there is so much written in the Old Testament law about it. Certainly, the sacrificial system was in place and did serve a two-purpose. 1) To atone for specific sins. 2) To point to a future once-for-all-time sacrifice in Jesus Christ. Now God says the obvious, “I don’t need your sacrifices”. Why? The people had become religious but with very little thought to the relationship God was calling them to. This is why He calls them to ‘thankfulness’. Thankfulness is a very ‘mindful’ position. We can’t be thankful without a great deal of consideration. God was shaping His people to learn how to have relationship with Him. He still is! In the bustle of religious activity, make sure to spend time in thankfulness for Jesus.
Lord, I will live a life of thanksgiving for all you have done for me.
Psalm 89 3-4 remembers the Davidic Covenant that we have already read and is summarized here -
Psalm 88 asks God ‘Are your deeds any good for the dead?’ and ‘Do the dead rise up and praise you?’. These are questions that the New Testament would answer. The deed of the cross is more than just good for the dead. It defeats death by Mending us! Because of this, there is a day coming where we will be able to Marvel and praise God forever…even rise up and praise Him!
