The goal of worship shouldn’t be comfort.
Pray The Word and Prepare for The Word
John 2:16 - "Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father's house into a marketplace!"
Read - John 2:13-25
God the Son knew best the heart of God the Father. In the matter of business going on in the temple, Jesus was clear that this had made economic more important than spiritual. Likely, these businesses were began with right motive (possibly as aides to weary travelers) but God designed the temple laws so that each part would mean something. He didn’t want a family to be able to travel easy to Jerusalem and buy a lamb. He wanted them to invest of their own best livestock. Why? So they would see the cost of their sin.
Lord, help me not to seek the easy way in my spiritual life.
This is the first temple clearing. Jesus re-visits this episode closer to His crucifixion. You can read about it here: Luke 19, Matthew 21 and Mark 11.
The cost to Mend us is, and always has been, high. The Marring of Sin robs our very lives. To Mend us Christ will spill His own precious blood as the perfect sacrifice to pay for those sins. The Old Testament and Covenant taught about that high price by the sacrifice of precious animals that had more than just financial value. When the temple business made offering those sacrifices as easy as a financial transaction then it began to cheapen the Mending that Christ would offer. Never forget the value of your salvation!
